La Manga Club has functioned as a top quality holiday resort since its initiation more than thirty years ago.
The resort was born out of the hard work and vision of US entrepreneur Gregory Peters in the 1960s.
La Manga had already begun development as a resort during this time when Mr Peters saw its potential and began to make a number of property purchases on the Mar Menor coastline.
His initial project concerned developing a high-level tourist attraction golf course in the region and before long, 450 hectares of land became the La Manga Golf Course.
Throughout the 1970s this golfing region developed more and the appointment of Robert Dean Putman saw the course, the lie of the fairways and the positioning of the 3,000 palm trees designed in an "as attractive as possible" manner.
In fact, many holidaymakers believe that the resort is a botanical garden of some kind as opposed to a golf course.
Since this time, famous golfers including Arnold Palmer and Colin Montgomerie have played on the greens of La Manga.
However, the 70s also saw the development of the resort as a tennis haven and in 1971 a 15-court tennis centre was built. Today, there are a total of 28 courts at the Tennis Centre.
La Manga Golf Club - as it was then known - was bought in 1981 by freight and passenger shipping company Dennington and relaunched as a resort which hosted major competitions.
The following year the four-star hotel Las Mimosas opened complete with 47 double rooms and the name of the La Manga Golf Club became La Manga Country Club and the club logo of a golfer taking a swing was replaced with a palm tree to reflect its shift from a golfing resort to a multi-functional resort.
La Manga Club described its nineties period as "The Golden Years" when the Hyatt Regency La Manga hotel was built while this period also saw the development of La Manga Club as it is now known.
Improvements during this period saw the construction of the new golf clubhouse in 1992 as well as an expansion of the La Princesa golf course to an 18-hole playing area.
This development of La Princesa took the resort's official course tally to three, making La Manga Club one of the rarities in European golfing resorts.
The 1990s also saw the implementation of the resort's Professional Football Centre, giving "several first division teams which had previously visited the resort and trained on the golf practice ground" a place to practice their football.
In 1997 the Norwegian Football Federation signed a deal to make La Manga the winter training base for a number of its teams, closely followed by similar arrangements with Swedish, Finnish and Danish teams.
In the more recent past, La Manga Club was voted Leading European Golf Resort at the World Travel Awards (WTA) three times between 2001and 2005 while also picking up a WTA for Spain's Leading Golf Resort in 2006.
Famous celebrities to have visited the resort over the years include the Spanish president Jose-Maria Aznar, actors Juliet Binoche and John Malkovich; ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev, singers Gloria Estefan, Sir Cliff Richard, Robbie Williams and Deep Purple and many footballers.
The Telegraph recently reported that La Manga Club is the best 2008 Spanish holiday destination for "sporty types".
