Budget carrier Ryanair is celebrating the launch of two new routes to Spain by releasing 500,000 "free seats".

Speaking yesterday (November 18th), the airline said the seats were available for people travelling throughout the months of December, January and February.

The carrier recently announced plans to offer flights to Spain from London's Gatwick Airport, with new routes to Alicante and Barcelona-Girona.

Commenting on the sale, Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said: "Ryanair is delighted to announce two new routes to/from London Gatwick to Barcelona and Alicante from 18th December.

Airline promotes holidays in Spain
Monarch – a popular airline with Britons booking flights to Spain – has joined forces with the Andalucian Tourist Board to promote holidays in the region.

As part of a month-long campaign, the carrier is working closely with the tourist board to create awareness about the region's attractions and exceptional visitor facilities.

Describing Andalucia as an "extraordinary" place, the airline suggested that it is the ideal destination for those looking to shake their winter blues.

"Andalucia boasts more than 800 kilometres of wonderful beaches, a sunny climate and an intriguing natural heritage, making it the ideal winter sun destination," Monarch said.

Low fares carrier Monarch has been named as the best leisure airline at the 2008 British Travel Awards.

Monarch – which offers regular flights to Spain – was also named as a runner up in the best scheduled airline and best low-cost airline categories.

This is the latest in a string of awards for the airline, which also recently scooped the Telegraph Readers Award for the best charter airline.

Commenting on the airline's success, managing director Tim jeans said: "This is a great achievement for Monarch and demonstrates the strength of the brand name in the highly competitive airline-market.

Long holidays 'could invalidate home insurance'
Britons enjoying long holidays in Spain have been warned to check their home insurance before leaving.

Speaking earlier this week, Darren Black, a home insurance expert at confused.com, said that many policies are invalidated if a homeowner is away for more than 30 consecutive days.

"For anyone planning on a month-long stay, whatever the time of year, it is essential that they make sure that there is someone staying in the house at some point whilst they are away to make sure home owners do not inadvertently invalidate their cover," he commented.

Ryanair to offer more flights to Spain
Budget carrier Ryanair is expected to announce plans to offer flights from Gatwick to Alicante.

At present the airline operates just three routes from Gatwick; however, in a move which may trouble easyJet, the carrier could soon be offering flights to Spain.

According to the Telegraph, the news is expected to be made official today (November 18th) at a press conference in London and as well as flights to Alicante, it is also expected that the airline will operate a daily service to Barcelona-Girona.

In related news, it was reported last month that more than six million people passed through Spain's airports during the month of September.

Holidays in Spain 'still popular'
British holidaymakers are still travelling to popular destinations such as Spain, it has been revealed.

A recent study carried out by low fare airline Monarch found that the credit crunch has not had an adverse affect travel.

Of those surveyed by the carrier, 36 per cent said they did not intend to let the economic climate affect their travel plans, while a further 41 per cent said they intended to take the same number of flights but spend less.

Liz Savage, managing director of Monarch's scheduled service division, said: "Year-on-year comparisons show that bookings for Summer are currently 43% higher than they were last November, which indicates that people are being more organised this year and booking their summer holidays much earlier than they have previously to take advantage of the low fares currently available in the market.

Holidaymakers can 'cut costs'
British people can dramatically cut the cost of their holidays by preparing a budget and making the right choices when it comes to currency exchange and credit cards, it has been claimed.

Speaking recently, Jasmine Birtles of Moneymagpie.com said travellers could reduce their costs by opting for a credit card which doesn't charge the user to withdraw money overseas.

Both the Post Office and Nationwide offer cards that are free to use in foreign countries and people aged over 50 can consider applying for a Saga card, which is free to use in Europe.

Tickle your taste buds in Andalucia
A market, dedicated entirely to selling cheeses, is set to open in the village of Antequera in Malaga tomorrow (November 15th).

Andalucia is home to dozens of goat's cheese factories, with 19 in Malaga alone, Euro Weekly reports.

The Malaga Goat Breeders Association is now hoping to capitalise on its produce by selling local cheese via the internet and at a monthly market – the first of which is taking place at the Plaza de San Francisco.

Plans are also in place to open a number of shops selling locally produced cheeses, enabling those taking holidays in Spain to buy unique gifts for their loved ones.
