Regular holidays are "in the British psyche"
British people have become accustomed to travelling abroad regularly and no longer see it as a luxury, it has been suggested.

Speaking earlier this week, Steve Barnes, corporate marketing manager for the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), said it is "in the British psyche" to go on holiday to Spain and other destinations every year.

"In difficult times you might downgrade your holiday, but I really don't think there will be that many that would cancel their holiday," he commented.

People may be forced to cancel in the event of redundancy; however, as long as they have a good travel insurance policy they should be able to claim their deposit back, Mr Barnes added.

'Mediterranean forest' for Alicante
Officials at Alicante port have announced plans to make the area greener.

From September work will begin on creating a Mediterranean-style forest of 900 trees, Typically Spanish reports.

The area will also include sand dunes and "special 12-metre anti-dust screens to stop pollution and carbon dust reaching the city".

Although some local residents say they are sceptical about the plans, it is thought that the trees will absorb a significant amount of CO2 – the same as 4,000 cars.

Brits 'unlikely to cancel holidays'
British people are unlikely to give up their annual holidays to Spain and other destinations, even in the midst of a recession.

That is the opinion of Steve Barnes, corporate marketing manager at the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), who said that it is "in the British psyche" to go abroad every year.

"In difficult times you might downgrade your holiday, but I really don't think there will be that many that would cancel their holiday," he commented.

The only reason people are likely to cancel their holidays is if they be become redundant and travellers should ensure that they take out a good travel insurance policy to offer protection against this, Mr Barnes furthered.

Abta offers holiday advice
With the credit crunch to contend with, many people will be taking extra care when booking their holidays to Spain and other destinations this year.

Speaking this week, the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said holidaymakers should ensure that they are covered if they need to cancel their break in the event of a redundancy.

Although most travel insurance providers usually cover redundancies, Abta advises that holidaymakers check before booking.

Steve Barnes, corporate marketing manager at the organisation, said people should make sure they book with a reputable company.

Alicante to have new high-speed train
The popular Spanish holiday destination of Alicante is set to benefit from a new AVE high-speed train system.

According to the Round Town News, authorities have decided to place most of the new network below the ground.

"However, the downside is that the deadline for the completion of the rail link has now been delayed until 2012, as placing of the tracks underground on the approach to the city will incur more advanced excavation work," the news provider said.

It is thought that the train will surface around 500 metres away from Alicante's train station.
