Murcia's 'seductive' cuisine
Gourmands flying out on Spanish holidays might like to make La Manga their destination following a glowing recommendation from Florida.

A journalist writing in Fort Myers' News-Press reveals how she had travelled to Murcia to retrace the steps of King Alfonso X and ended up falling in love with the region's food.

She recounted "gorgeous fruits and vegetables, marine delicacies, crusty 'arroces' made with short-grain rice from Calasparra and wines so full of regional character I had to reconsider my exclusive passion for those of La Rioja and Ribera del Duero."

The article also describes how the area's position - facing the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor lagoon - has influenced its cuisine, with bluefin tuna, langoustines, sea bream, grey mullet and cod roe often on the menu.

Golf holidays for comedian?
One of the UK's leading comedians could become a regular on the fairways of La Manga's golf courses in future, following his recent admission.

Dom Joly - star of Trigger Happy TV - admitted in the Independent that he has fallen in love with golf.

The funnyman used his column in the newspaper to describe how he has thrown himself into the worlds of golf and fishing - two facts which, he jokes, show that he is getting older.

"Middle age is inexorably creeping up behind me," said Joly.

Business owners 'take their jobs on holiday'
Blackberry devices and laptops are just as likely to be packed as suntan lotion by British entrepreneurs, a new survey has found.

Alliance & Leicester polled business owners heading out to holidays in Spain and elsewhere and found that 72 per cent stay 'in the loop' while abroad.

The golf courses of La Manga might be a good way to relax for the 72 per cent of West Midland professionals who find themselves worrying about their companies when on holiday.

"It is understandable that business owners feel the need to be around 100 per cent of the time to keep their business on track," commented Alliance & Leicester's Steve Jennings.

Spanish holiday tips for youngsters
Many youngsters will this year be embarking on their first Spanish holidays without their parents, but just because the shackles are off does not mean they should not take care.

That is the advice of insurer swiftcover.com, which found that 100,000 young people will be heading abroad without insurance.

Among the dangers facing British teenagers on holidays are getting lost, taking part in dangerous sports while not being insured and not using sun protection.

Spanish holiday food habits revealed
If the luggage being dragged of the conveyor belt in Spanish holiday airports looks heavy, that's because it is.

Tins of beans, boxes of cereal and packets of biscuits are all among the foodstuffs packed into suitcases by Brits heading out on Spanish holidays.

A survey of British tourists by Halifax Travel Insurance discovered that almost one in five like to take a taste of home with them when travelling to foreign climes.

The reason behind the tendency for Brits to cram their cases with supplies is apparently a fear of getting food poisoning.

Holidaymakers urged to "stay safe" in sun on Spanish holidays
Holidaymakers have been urged to stay safe in the sun on their Spanish holidays this summer.

The plea comes from European Union health and consumer chiefs who advise holidaymakers to take additional precautions when exposing their skin to the sun this summer.

It is hoped that by protecting themselves from the sun, the rising levels of skin cancer could be curbed.

"Our message to consumers this summer is very clear: be sun-smart this summer and seek protection," EU health commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said.

Money tips for those taking Spanish holidays
Brits are being urged to think about their money before taking flights to Spain for Spanish holidays this summer.

According to American Express, money-wise holidaymakers are swapping short breaks and for traditional fortnight holidays as they try to save money.

However, American Express Travellers Cheques claims that those who take longer holidays should think "carefully" about the type of money they take abroad.

"With the length of holidays away predicted to increase this summer the last thing holidaymakers are going to want to worry about is looking after piles of cash," commented Kirstie Bayley, vice president at American Express Travellers Cheques.
