Walking holidays in Spain 'top for 2008' 10th January 2008
Walking holidays in Spain could be a good solution to a family holiday dilemma in 2008 it has been reported.

Additionally, walking holidays can help families to bond as well as providing a good source of exercise, the Telegraph reports.

The newspaper adds that walking holidays can be popular with eco-friendly travellers and parents with teenagers.

Spain's Pyrenees are popular for summer walking, according to Tourism in Spain.

Brit lands mammoth catch on fishing holiday in Spain 10th January 2008
A British traveller recently hooked more than he bargained for while out fishing on a Spanish holiday, it has been reported.

Daniel Dixon was enjoying his first fishing trip abroad on Spain's River Ebro when he landed a whopping 135 lb cat-fish, the Peterborough Evening Telegraph reported.

The publication reported that while other Britons were "enduring wet and windy conditions" in the UK, Mr Dixon and two other anglers were enjoying luxury holidays in Spain.

"The fish fell to four 22ml halibut pellets fished on a five-pound test rod and 80lb main line.

Bob Daffon wins December golf event in Spain 10th January 2008
Bob Daffon won the Stapleford golf event that was held at the El Valle Golf Resort in December, popular among those taking golf holidays in Spain.

Runner up at the event was Howard Wright, who notched up 24 points closely behind Mr Daffon's 29, Club Murcia reports.

According to Club Murcia, conditions were akin to those of a summer's day in the UK - despite it being mid December.

Competitors at the event enjoyed a buffet lunch at nearby restaurant La Encina.

New air base will offer flights to Murcia 10th January 2008
Holidaymakers will soon have even more choice in terms of taking flights to Murcia from regional airports, after it was revealed that Ryanair intends to open a new base in Bournemouth.

The base - which will be the airlines 24th - will offer other flights to Spain including trips to Malaga and Palma.

Ryanair already offers flights to Alicante and Barcelona in addition to a number of other European destinations.

"Bournemouth Airport has competed successfully against airports across Europe to win our 24th European base," commented Ryanair's director of scheduled revenue, Sean Coyle.

Spain has "always been popular" 09th January 2008
Spanish holidays have "always been popular" for Britons who like do not like to venture too far away from home, it has been reported.

According to Motley Fool, France, Greece and Italy as well as Malta and Cyprus - which recently entered into the euro zone - are also popular for Brits in the summer time.

Motley Fool also added that for those fed up with the dreary UK weather "what could be better than planning a holiday now"?

Recently, the Association of British Travel Agents reported that a rise in winter holiday bookings was prompted by the bad English weather seen in summer 2007.

The comment was followed by news from insurance provider esure that more than 15 million Brits are looking to book a holiday this month in order to capitalise on the sale period.

Air travel demand 'at 18 month high' 09th January 2008
The international passenger demand grew by 9.3 per cent in November 2007, it has been revealed.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) this year-on-year growth represents the industry's highest ever growth rate.

According to esure, UK consumers should make an effort to research any weather patterns in the location they are travelling to prior to committing to a holiday.

The comment comes as esure reveals that more than 15 million Brits are looking to book a holiday in January during the sale period.

Barcelona is "popular" for romantic Brits 09th January 2008
Traditional European city breaks are popular among couples looking to celebrate Valentine's Day abroad, it has been reported.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), Barcelona is an emerging destination for romantics who are taking flights to Spain this February.

In 2006, a YouGov study revealed that Barcelona placed third in a poll of most popular Valentine's Day destinations among Britons.

"Barcelona has certainly grown in popularity over the last few years and not just for Valentine's, but throughout the year," commented an AITO spokesperson.

Lucky new year lottery winner celebrates in Spain 09th January 2008
Spain's national lottery draw El Nino has seen a host of lottery winners from the town of Castellon de la Plane, in Valencia's northerly province.

All tickets carrying the winning number of 87657 were sold in the Spanish town and the winners include the manager of the lottery office who bought a ticket herself, reports Typically Spanish.

The manager has confirmed that she will now be able to retire as she shares her winnings with a friend.

Like most people who enter the lottery, she bought a decimo - the tenth part of a ticket which has a value of 200,000 euros (149,000 in pounds) - part of a series altogether worth two million euros.

Bird population 'thrives' south of Alicante 09th January 2008
The bird population in the south of Alicante is currently thriving, according to the latest study.

Research conducted by the regional department of the environment has found that nearly 15,000 birds have reproduced in the province's wetlands during last year, reports Costa Blanca News.

Many of the region's birds have been studied in the annual census and the director-general of environmental management at the department Maria Angeles Centeno, described the area as an "indispensable triangle" for the reproduction of birds.

Those taking flights to Alicante may even spot a white-headed duck or a marbled duck on their travels as the wetlands are now home to the largest population of the feathered-friends in Europe, the study reveals.
