 Need a new tennis racquet for your tennis holidays in Spain? It seems America does, as the nation went sports crazy this month.
According to new figures from online marketing analyst comScore, sports and fitness saw the fastest growth in sales as the Christmas period approaches.
Sales of such goods rose by 31 per cent during the period, compared to the second highest growth of 18 per cent, in books and magazines.
"With five fewer days of holiday shopping between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, there is increasing pressure on consumers to make their holiday purchases in time for Christmas," said Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore.

 Golf holidays in Spain, a new set of irons, a membership at a local club - these are all things which could be on the Christmas wish list of golfers this year.
However, without a nudge in the right direction, many buyers could opt for the wrong gift, according to the Professional Golfers Association (PGA).
As such, the association has offered some tips to those who have a loved one who is also a lover of golf. For many, the "perfect gift" could be a series of lessons, which could bring a player's game along.

 Arriving in La Manga Club might mark the beginning of a perfect holiday but, for one British comedian, the fun begins long before setting foot in a resort.
Justin Lee Collins, who co-presents the Sunday Night Project with fellow comic Alan Carr, was asked by the Telegraph what is the best piece of advice he could give to somebody heading abroad.
The answer was, simply, to begin enjoying one's holiday as soon as possible.
"Your holiday starts the moment you put your bags into the car or cab on the way to the airport or station, so relax," said the bearded funnyman.

 Britons taking holidays in Spain over the Christmas period can take part in a range of festive activities.
Antas town council has scheduled a series of festive events to run until January 6th, with everything from carol concerts to street parades scheduled to take place.
The Three Wise Men will be visiting the area and visitors can enjoy musical performances from a host of local entertainers, Euro Weekly reports.
In addition, a number of workshops will also be taking place, with activities such as Christmas card making also on offer.

Obama gets holiday going with a swing |

 It seems that Barack Obama could have more than a little in common with the many people who take golf holidays annually in La Manga Club.
The president-elect - who plays off 16 - teed off his current holiday with a round of golf against a number of old friends, the Telegraph reports.
However, while his leadership credentials are yet to be put to the test, it seems his mastery of the fairways has already been called into question.
Describing a recent game in which Mr Obama took part, his spokesman said "I don't think it was real pretty".

BAA: Alicante among top destinations for Scots |

 Holidaying in La Manga Club could be on the Christmas wish lists of many Scottish people this Christmas, new figures suggest.
Airport operator BAA, which owns seven UK airports including those in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh, has published new figures providing an insight into Scottish travellers' behaviour over the current festive period.
It transpires that Alicante - which provides access to La Manga Club - is one of the leading destinations among travellers in the country.
Other popular hotspots among Scottish holidaymakers this winter include Tenerife and Dubai.

 Holidaymakers should not be too surprised if they see an increasing number of British beginners on tennis holidays in Spain next year.
A new survey reveals that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of people making new year's resolutions in the UK are looking to take up a new sport, hobby or interest.
While La Manga Club's world class golf courses could offer a less physically demanding option, it seems tennis might be better suited to the 48 per cent who wish to get more exercise in 2008.
Similarly, 49 per cent are aiming to lose weight, according to the survey by Gocompare.
