More overseas people moving to Alicante

The lure of southern Spain has seen the number of foreign residents living in Alicante City increase tenfold since a decade ago.

Figures reported by Typically Spanish suggest there are now 49,000 inhabitants living in the region who are originally from overseas - compared to 4,867 in 1998.

Britons make up 121,000 of the current figure living in the city, which is reachable by driving from La Manga Club and a great excuse for renting a car in Murcia.

However, the biggest foreign representations in the present population are made by people from Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina.

Holidays in Spain 'are among the most affordable'

Families looking to make the most of their money when heading abroad this year could do worse than renting an apartment in Spain, judging by the results of a new study.

The Post Office Holiday Money Report has listed the top ten most affordable destinations for British holidaymakers and ranked Spain in tenth place.

Indeed, despite a competitive performance from Greece and France, Spain was the only country from the eurozone to break into the top ten.

Andrew Spice of Post Office Travel Services said that given the performance of the economy and sterling, people from the UK will be checking prices carefully this year.

Irish hockey players heading to southern Spain

The Irish women's hockey team will be heading to southern Spain next month to take part in a training camp.

In preparation for the European Championships in Amsterdam this August, the squad will be put through their paces in Alicante during the first week of February, the Irish Independent reports.

As the scores of sportsmen and sportswomen who have trained at La Manga Club will testify, Spain's south coast offers a perfect climate for a sporting break.

Ireland's national coach Gene Muller said of the excursion: "This extended training camp signals the start of the preparation cycle for the Europeans in August.

Those looking to snap up bargain deals on holidays to Spain and other popular destinations should book early, it has been claimed.

Emma Waddell, head of PR at Thomson and First Choice, said that travellers booking their holidays now are likely to find the best deals.

"There will always be odd pockets where someone's cancelled but we actually do believe that the best prices are this time of year," she commented.

With some companies merging and others collapsing, many tour operators are cutting their capacity for 2009 and last-minute deals will be hard to come by, Ms Waddell added.

Travel insurance is 'a must' for winter holidays

Those taking holidays in Spain this winter should consider taking out a comprehensive insurance policy before travelling.

A recent study by Saga revealed that the average winter holiday suitcase is worth £238 more than summer bags.

Results show that one in ten Brits carry a suitcase worth £643 during the winter, compared to £405 in the summer months.

"The research revealed a worrying fact that many people do not keep receipts and may not therefore know the makes and models of items in their case, which could make it more difficult for them to make a thorough claim for any loss," Saga said.

Harlem Globetrotters to perform in Costa Blanca

The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters are set to perform in Benidorm later this year.

More than 128 million people have already seen the team perform, according to the Benidorm Spotlight.

The match will take place at L'illa Sports Palace on May 21st, with the Globetrotters going on to perform in Valencia, Madrid, Badalona, Zaragoza and Seville.

A number of events will also be taking place around the main arena, with a "street" zone where visitors can try their hand at basketball.

Ryanair cabin crew calendar is a 'sell-out'

Ryanair's annual cabin crew Chrismas calendar has already sold out, raising 100,000 euros for charity.

The calendar, which features pictures of Ryanair's cabin crew members, sold out in just four weeks.

Proceeds will be donated to Dublin's Simon Community – a charity which works with the city's homeless.

"We are very proud that our 2009 cabin crew charity calendar will now make such an enormous difference to the work of the Dublin Simon Community and the lives of the hundreds of homeless people here in Dublin," said Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara.

Photographic exhibition goes on show in Alicante

A new photographic exhibition has gone on display in San Andres de Almoradi, Alicante.

The exhibition is on display until January 30th and features the work of local photographer and graphic designer Pilar Mandl.

Entitled 'pidele peras al olmo', the exhibition comprises 52 large pieces and wad organised in conjunction with the Caja de Ahorros Mediterraneo.

"The title of the exhibition was chosen to express the fact that these days everything is possible 'digitally-speaking'," Ms Mandl told the Euro Weekly News.
