Benidorm filming to commence next month

Those taking holidays to Spain may spot some famous faces around the Costa Blanca area from next month, as filming begins on the third series of the hit ITV show Benidorm.

Produced by Tiger Aspect, the programme tells of the trials and tribulations of British holidaymakers staying at the all-inclusive Solana hotel.

According to the Benidorm Spotlight, the new series will offer more than sun, sea and sangria, with producers planning to show the resort's old town and areas such as El Campello and Callosa.

The comedy, which stars comedian Johnny Vegas, has been credited with giving the resort a tourism boost and local businesses are reportedly pleased that filming will continue this year.

Flybe sees 'record flight activity'

Budget airline Flybe last week saw record numbers of people visit its website.

Despite the credit crunch, it seems that demand for flights to Spain and other destinations is as high as ever.

The airline recently launched a ten-day sale knocking up to 50 per cent off certain routes.

Mike Rutter, Flybe's chief commercial officer, commented: "People want and need to travel, not only for leisure but also to hunt down and maintain valuable business and they also want the security of booking and travelling with an airline they trust, that has been investing in their regions for years and that also offers value for money.

Newcastle to twin with Alicante?

Budget airline easyJet has joined forces with a number of celebrities in calling for Newcastle to be officially twinned with Alicante.

According to Journal Live, Alicante is the most popular destination for holidaymakers from Newcastle and easyJet claims it is fitting to twin the two cities.

"We think Alicante would be a fantastic choice as, like Newcastle, it has recreated itself over recent years to become a busy, cosmopolitan city with an exciting and multi-faceted cultural scene," said Carly Brear, easyJet's UK commercial manager.

Furthermore, she suggested that the partnership could strengthen tourism links between the two destinations and encourage more people to take holidays in Spain.

Bmibaby increases flights to Spain

Budget airline bmibaby is increasing the number of flights to Spain that it operates.

Despite the economic doom and gloom, good-value holidays in Spain are still popular and the airline will begin operating more flights from the Midlands, Birmingham and Manchester this summer.

Crawford Rix, managing director of the airline, said he has seen a strong demand for traditional summer sun destinations.

"The extra capacity will also make bmibaby the largest low cost carrier flying from the Midlands to the Mediterranean and our great low fares mean that people can still afford to get away for a holiday this year," he commented.

Kids want 'great swimming pools'

When it comes to holidays, nothing is more important to children than a good swimming pool, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by First Choice found that 92 per cent of kids take a dip in the pool every single day they are on holiday.

Further results show that 46 per cent of children spend "nearly all" of their holiday in the pool, with 50 per cent saying it is the most important part of their break.

Unsurprisingly, parents cited good value, reputation and comfortable accommodation as the most important part of their holiday.

Half of Brits support Heathrow expansion

Almost half of Brits are in support of the controversial Heathrow expansion plans, it has been revealed.

A survey commissioned by Holiday Extras found that 49.5 per cent of people are eager to see the construction of a third runway and believe it will provide a vital boost for the country's economy.

Mike Whiting, managing editor at Holiday Extras, said that given the recent media attention and protests, it was surprising to see that so many travellers are in support of the expansion.

Manchester airport awarded 'Carbon Standard'

Those taking flights to Spain may be interested to learn that Manchester Airport has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard.

The Carbon Trust was established in 2001 and the Standard is presented to organisations that are making a conscious effort to manage and reduce their carbon emissions.

Andrew Cornish, marketing director at Manchester Airport, commented: "The money saved from energy efficiency measures feeds back into the business and reduces our operating costs, which is very important in a highly competitive industry like ours, where we are under increasing pressure to lower charges to our customers."

He added that the Standard award is a way of demonstrating to stakeholders and passengers that real progress is being made.

Join the 'Wine Club' at La Manga

Guests at La Manga Club can enjoy fine wine and great company every third Thursday evening as part of the resort's new Wine Club.

This month's Wine Club event takes place on February 19th in the Piano Bar and guests can sample cheeses and an extensive collection of wines.

Selected wines can also be purchased at a discounted price over the course of the evening.

A spacious and modern area, the Piano Bar at La Manga Club is open nightly from 7pm and as well as enjoying fine wines, guests can sample a selection of flavoured vodkas and of Asian and Middle Eastern tapas.
