Airports face new regulations
Plans to give the Civil Aviation Authority more powers could mean that airports face heft fines if passengers encounter lengthy delays and problems.

The government is proposing to change the way airports are regulated in order to improve efficiency and avoid problems similar to those seen during the opening of Heathrow's Terminal 5 last year.

According to the Telegraph, airports could also face penalties if they fail to make appropriate preparations for the weather.

Gatwick Airport came in for criticism last year when it was forced to close for a number of hours, following a light "sprinkling of snow".

Ryanair to launch web-only check-in from October
From October, those taking flights to Spain with Ryanair will be required to check-in online.

The airline said the move will allow passengers to avoid lengthy queues and delays at the airport.

Passengers who wish to take a large suitcase onboard will be able to leave their bags at one of Ryanair's drop zones.

The transition to 100 per cent web check-in will be done in several phases but from May 2009, all those making new bookings will be required to use web check-in.

Brits 'make the most of cheap deals'
British holidaymakers are making the most of the cheap deals available and booking last-minute breaks abroad, it has been revealed.

Figures released by Sainsbury's Finance show that foreign currency transactions rose significantly in January of this year, compared to the same period in 2008.

However, it was also revealed that average transaction values have increased by 15 per cent, with people having to spend more due to the strength of the euro.

Sam Marrs, head of Sanisbury's Travel Money, commented: "British holidaymakers have suffered badly given the declining value of the pound, but clearly it's not stopping them taking advantage of the holiday deals currently available.

The majority of Brits taking flights to Spain and other destinations are happy with their airport experiences, it has been revealed.

Of those polled, just six per cent said they would be reluctant to make a recommendation.

It was also revealed that 50 per cent of passengers had to wait less than five minutes to check their luggage in.

Travel industry will 'remain resilient'
The travel industry will remain resilient, despite the credit crunch, it has been claimed.

Steve Barnes, corporate marketing manager at the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), suggested that people will continue to take holidays to Spain and other destinations.

"We don't believe that they are going to drastically change, because people have it in their psyche that they want to take holidays," he commented.

With the collapse of some airlines, it also means that there is less capacity on the market and Mr Barnes indicated that many companies are still doing well.
