New summer routes to Spain for bmibaby

The airline bmibaby has announced it is starting new flights to Spain this summer, with flights from Manchester Airport to Madrid and Barcelona opening in June and September respectively.

Those wishing to travel on a Spanish holiday will welcome the announcement which sees the airline introduce the Madrid flight on a Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday on June 16th 2008.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona route will run four times a week on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from September 8th 2008.

Crawford Rix, managing director of bmibaby, expressed his delight that the airline was offering these destinations, highlighting that the Manchester to Madrid route was not currently served at the airport.

Young golfers victorious at La Manga

A team of Sussex-based young golfers have claimed victory at a tournament hosted by La Manga club.

Sussex under-18s defeated the Murcia select team 8-2 at the Spanish resort which is often the chosen location for golf holidays, reports The Argus.

Taking the format of a three-quarter handicap four-ball betterball, Ashley Rees then claimed a medal for a brace of 72s.

Runner up was Matt Turner who had travelled to Spain after only just finishing the Dubai Desert Classic.

Students 'looking for more than a tan'

Students taking off on their gap year travels are looking to get more than simply a golden glow, it has been claimed.

According to STA Travel, such holidaymakers are looking to take more than "fantastic memories" and a sun tan home with them.

Many students taking flights to Spain could be doing so in order to learn the language, after a spokesperson for the company revealed that picking up a new language is top on the list of gap-year travellers' priorities.

"Twenty-four per cent hoped this would be a new language, while 11 per cent of respondents said they hoped to learn to cook the cuisine of a new country," she added.

Eco-issues 'will not stop Brits taking Spanish holidays'

UK travellers remain more concerned about the price of their Spanish holidays than the impact of their travels on the environment, it has been asserted.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), sustainable tourism is viewed by many holidaymakers as "more expensive".

A study by TNS Online Omnibus recently showed that 65 per cent of Brits would not change their travel plans in order to alleviate the environmental impact of their holiday.

"If you ask someone if they are concerned about the environment it is unlikely they will say 'no', [but] from a customers perspective it is price that's driving them," Abta's Sean Tipton commented.

New flights to Alicante announced from Edinburgh

Taking luxury holidays to Spain will now be even easier for Scottish travellers as Ryanair announces new flights to Alicante from Edinburgh.

The no-frills airline is launching flights from the Scottish capital to Alicante as part of a considerable extension to its operations from Edinburgh Airport – increasing its routes from two to 19.

Those wishing to take a Spanish holiday this year will welcome the news which arrives following a significant expansion to the services at the Scottish airport.

David Johnston, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, confirmed: "Developing Scotland's direct connectivity with the world has been a key priority over recent years and we have invested £95 million in bringing in new routes.

Cycle tour takes in the sights of Alicante

The third stage of the Volta a Valenciana cycle tour took in the sights of Alicante with the stage's start and finish line located in the nearby town of Ibi.

However, according to VeloNews the stage ended with controversy as a misdirected peloton split confused some riders who took the wrong direction at the crucial final 5km.

The two leading cyclists managed to take the correct exit and it was Ruben Plaza who claimed first place, stealing the leader's jersey from previous stage victor Jose Ivan Gutierrez.
