Holidays are an 'essential expenditure'
Holidays to Spain and other popular destinations are widely seen as an necessity, rather than a luxury, it has been suggested.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito), holidays are part and parcel of every day life, and people are unlikely to sacrifice them in a hurry.

Aito public relations officer Ian Bradley, said that alongside houses and cars, holidays are viewed as a necessity.

"I think in this climate there's enough worry out there regarding redundancies, interest rates, house repossessions and all sorts of things, people just feel the need to get away," he explained.

Commenting on the situation, Jeremy Cook, chief economist at the situation, said: "The overall feeling for 2009 is that there will be a pull back from the edge of a stronger sterling. It's been pretty rough for the last part of 2008, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Smart holidaymakers 'travel at Christmas'
Employees looking to use as little as possible of their annual leave should take their main holiday around Christmas time, it has been suggested.

According to travel experts at Teletext, taking holidays in Spain and other destinations over the festive period is an excellent option for "savvy" travellers.

A recent study carried out by the organisation revealed that many holidaymakers are using the downturn to secure good deals on flights and accommodation.

Teletext marketing director Ash Makkar commented: "It's no surprise that they’re opting for sunshine breaks as the weather in the UK has turned arctic and we didn't have much of a summer so despite economic doom and gloom people are craving their sunshine fix.
