Spain's ministry for the interior has announced its intention to beef up security in tourist populated areas this summer.

According to Costa Blanca News, the summer 2008 security operation began on July 1st and will effect all major tourist zones in the country.

The added security will see an additional 6,300 officers from a number of different forces will be deployed throughout the summer season until September 30th.

"The aim of the operation is to boost police numbers in areas that are considered to be of high value to terror groups seeking to disrupt the economy by driving away tourists," the publication revealed.

"Sahara weather" reported in Spain
Following heatwave conditions in southern parts of Spain last week, the temperature is still toasty to the delight of those enjoying Spanish holidays despite recent thunder storms.

Typically Spanish reports that the "Sahara weather" is likely to reach above 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

And the hot weather will be noticeable in particular to those taking flights to Alicante and Murcia from the UK where temperatures are set to be highest.

Last week, orange alerts were issued for areas in Andalucía, the publication reports, while Grenada was on yellow alert due to the hot weather.

Apprentice winner stays in bed after Spanish holiday
It seems that television's The Apprentice winner Lee McQueen should have taken the health advice offered by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain while enjoying a recent holiday in Spain.

The 30-year-old winner beat thousands of applicants to secure a position working with Sir Alan Sugar at Amstrad's factory in Brentwood, Essex, but failed to make an appearance there today on what should have been his first day on the job.

McQueen's role is to develop digital advertising screens at the factory.

"Lee is at home with a virus.

Search for Spanish holidays has been 'revolutionised' by internet
The growth of the internet has helped to transform holiday searches, one commentator has claimed.

The internet has also helped to make it easier for travellers to find the perfect holiday, according to Holiday Lettings, spurring an increase in holiday bookings.

According to tourism figures from the Office for National Statistics for the 12 months leading to April 2008, the number of visits abroad by UK residents was recorded at 70.3 million.

Bashful Brits book Benidorm breaks
UK holidaymakers enjoy traditional family holidays in Spain, but tend not to brag about it, it has been suggested.

According to News Guardian, bashful Britons most enjoy taking flights to Spain for holidays on the beaches of Benidorm.

Other Spanish spots that Brits enjoy frequenting on the quiet include the Costa Del Sol and Malaga, according to the Boots poll.

"Whether its Benidorm or Brighton, people need to remember that wherever they go on holiday it is important they take the necessary health precautions," Boots pharmacist Angela Chalmers said.

Avoiding sunburn on Spanish holidays
This summer, Brits taking flights to Murcia and Alicante have been offered some advice on how to get the best from their break and avoid having their fun spoiled by tummy troubles and sunburn on a Spanish holiday.

According to research by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, of the thousands of people who take an annual two-week break in the sun, 81 per cent will fall ill, the Western Mail reports.

However, holidaymakers can avoid ruining their breaks by making preparations such as taking a first aid kit with basic medicines abroad.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain notes that those who rely on overseas medications can put their health at risk by failing to understand instructions on side-effects and dosage.

Insurer offers tips for driving on Spanish holidays
An insurance company has offered tips to anyone planning to drive while enjoying a holiday in Spain this year.

Cooperative Insurance has aimed to highlight the importance of securing appropriate motor insurance for driving outside the UK and establishing how local rules and regulations vary.

Anyone who fails to take out a proper insurance deal while taking advantage of car rental in La Manga or driving their own vehicle on holiday in Spain could live to regret the resulting financial implications, the insurance firm has warned.

David Neave, director of general insurance at Co-operative Insurance, said: "Driving abroad might seem like a great way to save money and will add something a little more adventurous to their holiday.

Brits 'unwilling to give up Spanish holidays'
Individuals and families living in the UK are generally unwilling to give their Spanish holidays this year, it has been suggested.

Frances Tuke from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has insisted that Britons tend to be very reluctant to forego a holiday they had planned because of financial hardships.

The British economy has hit relatively hard times in recent months but many thousands of people from across the country still look set to find the cash for a holiday in Spain at some point this summer.

"We know from previous recessions and difficult times that holidays are the last things that people are prepared to give up.

Abta: Spain still reigns in holiday market
Holidays in Spain are still proving extremely popular with British tourists despite the fact that their finances are being increasingly squeezed as the year goes on, it has been claimed.

According to comments from a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), the demand for Spanish holidays has not diminished despite the UK's economic downturn.

Frances Tuke from Abta has said that while there were some fears that the weakening of the pound against the euro could see less people travelling from the UK to Europe, these worries have proved to be largely unfounded.

"The industry is performing extremely well all over really but it's performing particularly well to mid-haul and long-haul destinations," Ms Tuke aded.
