St Andrews breaks down barriers by hosting Women's British Open 03rd August 2007
History is being made at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews this week as it plays host to a women's professional golf tournament for the first time.

For over 250 years, the Royal & Ancient clubhouse - which nestles behind the first tee - has been exclusively reserved for males, but for the duration of the Women's British Open it will be open to all.

Indeed, Janice Moody - a 34-year-old pro from Scotland - reportedly became the first mother to change a nappy in the clubhouse in its 253-year history when her son Craig found himself in need of attention.

Women have been permitted to play the Old Course, though, for the last 30 years.

British prodigy follows Beckham from La Manga to America 03rd August 2007
An 18-year-old from Lymm, Manchester, is following in the footsteps of football megastar David Beckham by journeying to the US to pursue a professional career in "soccer".

To continue the comparison, Charlotte Robertson has even met the England star twice before - once at the La Manga resort in Spain, and also at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium.

However, it appears that Ms Robertson didn't make much of an impression the first time around: "I don't think he remembered me, he said he didn't anyway," she told the Manchester evening News.

Beckham had been at La Manga with the England team, where they made use of the world-class training facilities, temperate climate and luxury accommodation.

La Manga trip proves beneficial for Dunfermline star 02nd August 2007
A trip to the La Manga Club in Spain has hastened a professional footballer's rehabilitation from a serious knee injury, it has been reported.

Surgery on Greg Ross' left knee caused him to miss both the chance to appear in the Tennent's Scottish Cup final with Dunfermline and Scotland's under-20 world cup campaign - while he is also set to be unavailable for at least the first two months of the coming season.

However, a trip to the La Manga Club for some pre-season training - even though he was only able to take part in gym sessions - provided him with a much-needed boost.

"I never expected to go to La Manga," Ross explained in the Tayside and Fife Courier.

Cheap flights boost Spanish holiday market 01st August 2007
The popularity of Spanish holidays can be explained in part by the availability of cheap flights to the region, it has been claimed.

According to Andy Welland from Propertyshowrooms.com, the proliferation of flights to the country means the Spanish tourism industry is particularly vibrant.

In contrast, the seasonal nature of the Greek and Cypriot tourism industries means there are fewer lights to the area in off-peak times - further impacting on demand during these periods as holidays become more expensive.
