Bmibaby unveils winter flight programme
In news which many be of interest to those booking flights to Spain, budget airline bmibaby has launched its 2009/10 winter flight programme.

The airline will fly to 19 European destinations during winter, including Spanish hotspots such as Malaga and Murcia.

Crawford Rix, managing director of the carrier, indicated that despite the economic downturn, bookings are still looking healthy.

"We have seen strong early bookings for summer 2009 as people are keen to save money by booking early.

Brits 'reluctant to sacrifice holidays'
Brits are reluctant to sacrifice their holidays to Spain and other destinations, it has been suggested.

According to Skyscanner, the number of people searching for flights during the first quarter of his year is up 54 per cent on the same period in 2008.

Gareth Willims, chief executive at the flight search engine, said that people may be feeling the need to escape the doom and gloom.

"They are determined to find the very best deals possible and they are less keen on sites that charge commission, or sites which expect them to trawl through different dates and destinations one by one to find the best offers," he commented.

New exhibition to open in Alicante
A new historical exhibition will be opened this week by Queen Sofia at the Alicante Archaelogical Museum.

Those taking holidays in Spain will be able to view Greek artefacts on loan from the British Museum.

According to Think Spain, the exhibition will be open to the public until October, meaning that Brits jetting to Spain this summer will have ample opportunity to have a look around.

Items on show include letters, coins, sculptures, marble artefacts and bronze statues.

Andalucia's first metro is opened
A new metro system has been opened in the Spanish region of Andalucia.

According to Typically Spanish, the first train to use the new line departed from the San Bernardo station at lunchtime today.

"It was Line 1 of the new system which opened this week which, when complete, will service 22 stations along an 18-kilometre route," the news provider said.

The new system is expected to carry around 14.

Costa Blanca hotels set for 'Easter boom'
Hotels in the Costa Blanca region of Spain are preparing for a busy Easter period, it has been revealed.

According to Hosbec, the Benidorm and Costa Blanca hoteliers Association, hotels in the area could have occupancy rates of up to 90 per cent over Easter, as families from across Europe take holidays in Spain.

The organisation's president, Antoni Mayor said that most hotels are already around 70 per cent full and with last-minute bookings that figure is expected to increase considerably, Typically Spanish reports.

Meanwhile, families looking to get away this Easter could consider holidaying at La Manga Club in Murcia.

Easter holidaymakers urged to buy insurance
Nearly two-thirds of British holidaymakers would consider jetting abroad without travel insurance, it has been revealed.

The survey, which was carried out by Moneysupermarket.com, also found that one in 12 people never take out cover.

Maxine Baker, travel insurance manager at the site, said she is shocked at the number of people who would take holidays to Spain and other destinations without buying insurance.

Bosses offer staff 'longer holidays'
Longer holidays in Spain could be on the cards for many British workers this year, as many employers increase annual holiday allowances.

According to figures from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the average UK manager has been given three additional holidays over the last year, bringing annual leave up to 28 days a year.

The research also found that an increasing number of people are being offered time off in lieu rather than being paid for overtime work, the Telegraph reports.

Professor Lord Eatwell, chief economist at the CMI, said it was encouraging that workers were being offered holidays rather than being made redundant.

Brits go online for 'cheap deals'
An increasing number of Brits are opting to search for their holidays to Spain and other destinations online rather than visiting travel agents, it has been claimed.

According to research carried out by travel searching engine Kayak.co.uk, around 85 per cent of Brits are still planning to jet abroad this year.

Brits set to receive a 'warm welcome' in Spain
British holidaymakers taking a break in Spain can expect to receive an even warmer welcome then usual this year.

Spanish hoteliers, shopkeepers and taxi drivers are being invited to attend a series of seminars aimed at helping them to improve their English skills and be more friendly towards tourists.

According to the Telegraph, those attending the lectures will be taught key phrases such as "have a nice day" and taxi drivers will be urged to keep their cars looking clean and smelling fresh.

The programme of events is being organised by the Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce at a cost of around 40,000 euros.

Tennis holidays at La Manga Club
Located in south-east Spain, in the popular region of Murcia, La Manga Club basks in sunshine for more than 300 days every year – which could make it the perfect destination for a tennis holiday.

Sprawling over 1,400 acres, the resort is home to a five-star hotel, a wide selection of holiday apartments and more than 20 restaurants and bars.

Guests taking a tennis holiday at La Manga Club will be spoilt for choice, with 28 multi-surface courts available, including four AstroTurf courts and four hard courts. In addition, there are two paddle tennis areas and a squash court.
