Ryder Cup bid could bring golf lovers to La Manga |
Spain's bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup could be strengthened by its pedigree in golf holidays, according to a prominent Spanish golf figure.
Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) president Gonzaga Escauriaza remarked that Spain's reputation for golfing tourism could serve to boost the country's efforts to become the first continental European host of the prestigious competition.
Mr Escauriaza told SportBusiness: "For us, to be the heartland, the home of golf outside Great Britain and Ireland, is important because of the tourism opportunities."
If the bid is successful, the tournament will be held near Madrid.

Madrid Cricket Club (MCC) has stated that it intends the 3rd Madrid CC Twenty20 Solidarity Cricket Tournament at La Manga Club to be as successful in 2010 as it was last year.
On the luxury holiday resort's official blog, the organisation revealed that 2,350 (£2,135) was raised by the event 12 months ago, with proceeds going to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation.
Around 1,200 children suffering from visual, hearing and intellectual disabilities benefited from the money, which was used to purchase specialist cricket equipment.
"This year we hope to have just as much success on and off of the pitch," the MCC commented.
