Spanish holidays rivalled by congress tourism

Beach-loving holidaymakers are not the only people filling up the flights to Spain, it has been reported.

Event Planner Spain reports that, according to the Spain Convention Bureau, congress tourism is the tourist industry sector with the biggest growth.

Mayor of Malaga Francisco de la Torre claimed that Spain has the fifth most important congress tourism sector in the world.

According to the mayor, tourism in this sector had a turnover of €3 billion in 2006.

Flights to Spain to be 'boosted' this winter

Monarch has boosted its flights to Spain - specifically flights to Alicante, Lanzarote, Malaga, Menorca and Tenerife - from Luton and Birmingham in its 2008/2009 winter schedule.

Managing director Liz Savage noted that demand for travel to Spanish holiday destinations like the Canary Islands has been "huge" for the winter months.

She noted that 15 per cent more seats are now available from Birmingham and ten per cent more from London Luton this winter than in 2007/2008.

"We're once again ahead of our rivals by putting our entire winter programme on sale before the summer months begin and with more flights to the destinations our passengers want, we're giving them exactly what they want too," Ms Savage commented.

People taking Spanish holidays in the coming months have been reminded of the importance of taking out travel insurance, not just for flights to Spain but when travelling between any airports.

Passenger numbers at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield rose by over 12 per cent in March 2008 compared to the previous year, it has been revealed.

Robin Hood Airport now claims to have handled 2.85 million passengers since opening in April 2005.

And the most popular type of flight from Robin Hood Airport were flights to Alicante - with the destination being the top flight route for March 2008.

Flights to Murcia for Caravaca de la Cruz

This May, following the announcement from the Met Office that this summer is likely to be a wetter than average one in the UK, Britons might want to cheer themselves up by taking flights to Murcia for a Spanish holiday.

A special festival known as Caravaca de la Cruz: Fiestas de la Santisima y Vera Cruz is taking place in the spring month in Murcia.

According to Murcia's tourism website, the festival commemorates the appearance of the Holy Cross in the fortress of the Moorish king Abu-Zayt.

Spain continues 2016 Olympic bid

Spanish holidays became all the rage among sports fans in 1992 when it hosted the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Now, Spain is vying to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Madrid and has announced that its 30 sponsors have now committed in excess of €12 million in support for the campaign.

The Madrid Club 16 - as the group of main sponsors is known - is made up of leading financial, commercial and construction businesses.

Spain is looking to attract classy Indian tourists to its shores for Spanish holidays, one commentator has claimed.

According to Thaindian News, the Spain Tourism Board is looking to increasing the profile of Spanish holidays to Indians.

"We have almost six billion tourists visiting us every year and we would like more people to visit the country from India," Spain's ambassador to India Ion de la Riva reportedly said.
