Holidaymakers urged to prepare for further disruption

With many flights to Spain and elsewhere being halted by the volcanic ash plume currently travelling across the UK, passengers are being urged to prepare for further disruption.

Matthew Paxton, chief operating officer at Holiday Extras, said travellers expecting to fly tomorrow may wish to consider booking accommodation for the night.

"By reserving your room at an airport hotel you can afford to relax during this time of uncertainty and get safely to the airport in good time," he added.

Transport hubs in Scotland were the first to ground flights this morning, with the rest of the country following later in the day.

Travel insurance 'is a must for holidays to Spain'

Brits planning to jet off on holidays to Spain and other popular destinations have been urged to take out a travel insurance policy before leaving the UK.

"Holidaymakers should protect themselves by ensuring that they have travel insurance in place to cover against any losses should the worst happen," said Jennifer Thomas, a spokesperson for the company.

Holidaymakers are advised to keep important documents locked in their hotel safe and ensure that additional funds are available in case of an emergency.

Neil Pakey, deputy chief executive for Peel Airports, said Liverpool is bucking the national trend and is currently one of the UK's best performing airports in terms of passenger growth.

"More and more passengers are now flying via the airport and improved accessibility from across the region means that JLA is becoming the airport of choice for a growing numbers of travellers from right across the north-west," he added.
