The area of La Manga Club and the surrounding region is an area of natural beauty and a truly beautiful place to explore of foot. There are numerous suggested walks lasting anything from 30 minutes to up to 4 hours. The activity centre which is based on La Manga Club is able to provide maps and routes which also gives the difficulty of each walk. La Manga Club is located adjacent to Calblanque National Park, which includes many paths and trails, through the mountains to many areas of natural beauty including some stunning unspoilt beaches on the Mediterranean.
These walking paths are also used as jogging trails and in many instances cycle paths run alongside. There are direct routes to many of the beaches of La Manga del Mar Menor which is a calm salt water lagoon, which runs for about 20 miles, with the Mar Menor lagoon on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. This area is known as La Manga Strip and whilst it has many hotels, bars and restaurants at the upper end close to Cabo de Palos the further you go along the strip the quieter and more tranquil it becomes.
The beaches along the Mar Menor are definitely worth a visit; the water is calm and warm and remains very shallow for quite a distance out. These beaches are perfect for families with small children. In recent years the promenade has been extended along the beach and there are many nice cafes and restaurants along the promenade. The further you walk down La Manga strip the more Spanish the cafes become and this is an excellent area to enjoy Tapas and local delicacies.
Although the Mar Menor is a lagoon, the path does dead end at the bottom of La Manga strip, so you will need to return the same way back up the strip to the Cabo de Palos and La Manga Club area.
If you plan some of your walking routes along the coast in the other direction the towns of Portman and La Union are definitely worth a visit. Portman is a pleasant walk of about one hour from La Manga Club. From Portman you can continue your walk to La Union or catch a local bus to many local Spanish towns and villages in this area.
The local town of Los Belones is only a 5 minute drive from La Manga Club. However Los Belones can be reached via Calblanque National Park and there is direct access from La Manga Club onto the park. The walk will take about 45 / 50 minutes and takes you through the groves and alongside the local cemetery. This is also good cycle route into town. The local horse riding stable of Rancho del la Fuente is located along the road out of Los Belones and backs on to Calblanque National Park.
The towns of Cabo de Palos, La Union and Los Belones all have regular weekly street markets. The largest being Cabo de Palos which takes place on a Sunday morning and the marina area and local fish restaurants are worth a visit.
