There are many, many reasons why people flock back to La Manga year after year and one of the main ones is the golf, with a choice between three stunning courses plus a pitch and putt, golfers could be forgiven for thinking they’d died and gone to golfing heaven when they touch down at La Manga Club. With a choice between the North Course, the South Course and the West Course, even during a two-week holiday you won’t tire of the challenges posed by these offerings.
Add to the specifics of the golf courses themselves, the golf facilities, the weather and the mind-blowing choice of styles and types of accommodation and you start to see why this place is so very popular. Set right in the south of Spain, the resort enjoys an astounding number of hours of sunshine year round, which is great news for golfers who are sick of dodging showers in the UK. What’s more, although La Manga is an undisputed paradise for golfers, it’s a place where non-golfing partners are only too happy to come, just for the ride! Because there’s plenty to do here for non-golfers, there’s an abundance of couples that come so that one can enjoy the golf and the other can perhaps take up a new sport or simply relax in the Spa.
The 18-hole, par 73 South Course is La Manga Club’s flagship Championship course which is arguably one of the most challenging courses around. Recognised as an exceptional, tournament standard course, the La Manga South Course will push even the most accomplished golfer to their limits. With an abundance of water features; in fact no less than 15 of the eighteen holes here have water to interrupt all but the best shots, you’ll be able to relish your time in the palm-lined fairways in between shots. Add to the water hazards, the abundance of bunkers and you’ll soon see why a whole host of the world’s top golfers come here to train.
The good news at the South Course is that the first nine holes are reputed to be trickier than the back nine. Nonetheless, the back nine have their own hidden challenges, most notably an abundance of doglegs. With its white, yellow, blue and red tees, rated 74.3, 72.5, 76.7 and 73.2 respectively, the experience of playing this course will stay in your memory for a very long time.
The North Course, which is a bit shorter than the South Course also has its own very real challenges that make for an interesting and satisfying round every time. Add to this, the landscape of palm trees, lakes and natural storm gullies (called barrancas by the locals) and you’ll soon see why people love this particular course, thanks to its call for a precise and calculated game, rather than necessarily long shots every time. What’s more, the greens on this course pose a particular test for even the most precise putter. A Par 71 course, with yellow, blue and red tees, with respective course ratings of 68.7, 73 and 71.6, you’re sure to enjoy this course and you’ll no doubt find yourself counting the seconds before you can come back for more and refine your game even further.
The West Course at La Manga, is different to the other two courses, because it is extremely natural, with fewer man-made features along with an abundance of pine trees. Another 18-hole course, this time with a par 72, this course is significantly hillier than the others. With a tight opening and a more open return, the West Course calls for significant skill to master its hidden challenges. One of the most popular features of this course at La Manga is the stunning views from the rolling fairways and fast greens. A real unexpected challenge, even if you only come for a weekend, you need to make sure you include the West Course as one of your ‘must plays’.
No matter which level of golf you play, and no matter how long you plan to stay at La Manga Club, you can be sure to enjoy as much or as little golf as you want, just when you want it. Add to this, the availability of the Golf Academies, the individual tuition and the pitch and putt that’ll help you raise your game, and you can be sure to head home a good deal more proficient than when you arrived.
