Even if your main reason for choosing La Manga Club is the sports facilities on offer, theres little doubt that at some point during your stay, you are likely to avail of the great choice of restaurants and bars on offer. One thing people sometimes forget when travelling to this neck of the woods, is the great selection of new wines and fizz they can try. With prices ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, you truly will be spoilt for choice if you look at the wine lists with a truly open mind.
Even though La Manga Club is in Murcia, you will find that the restaurants offer a whole host of Spanish wines from all over the country. With a huge number of wine producers and grape varieties, Spain truly is a wine-lovers paradise. Throughout the whole of Spain, there are wine producers who have reached global notoriety. Probably the best known is La Rioja, which includes the now very popular Cava variety. In Murcia alone however, there are tried and tested varieties such as Alicante, Bullas, Jumilla and Yecia, together with the Abanilla and Campo de Cartagena table wines or Vinos de la Tierra.
Being on holiday, is a great opportunity to open up your palate to new foods and new wines, and with the selection of restaurants and bars on offer, both onsite and off at La Manga, there are few better places to do it.
If you’re a red wine lover and are watching your budget, the likes of Honor Vera Garnacha is a lovely young, fruity red that certainly won’t break the bank. If you prefer more of a floral option, a Comoloco Jumillia 2010 will go equally well with all meat and cheese options. That said, if you’re looking to really push the boat out, a Remirez de Ganuza Reserva Rioja 2003 is sure to please. With its almost black colour, it is a spicy and smoky choice, which is perfect again with almost any meaty or cheesy combination.
If it’s white wine that floats your boat, a good mid range option is Shaya Verdejo Rueda 2010, which is made from old vines and is a really refreshing and lively wine with good acidity. Perfect with all light dishes and in particular fish, this wine is a really good buy. If you fancy a more substantial white, with more of an oaky finish, there’s Avanthia Godello Valdeorras 2009, which is agreeably a more pricey option, but truly has some style and panache about it. Again made from vines that have stood the test of time, this wine is notably more complex and would even stand up to a light meat dish if the mood took you.
Thereafter, if you’re seeking out a rosé or a Cava, then you won’t go far wrong if you choose a Muga Rosado Rioja or a Pares Valta Cava Brut Nature, both of which come at the very affordable end of the scale. Although you’re not likely to find all of these wines in all of the restaurants, the message is clear, when in Rome, do as the Romans do and when in Spain, seek out some new Spanish wines to taste and try! If you take the time to ask your waiter or waitress, you’ll usually find that they’ll be able to suggest something you haven’t tried before, within your specified budget. Cheers! … and here’s to your La Manga Holiday.
