When in Rome, do as the Romans do and when in Spain, eat tapas, iIf you are on holiday at La Manga Club resort or are planning your holiday at La Manga, it is highly likely that eating some tapas is on your holiday wish list. Tapas is a traditional Spanish dish, which has become a bit misinterpreted thanks to its wide adoption in the UK.
The word tapas comes from the word tapa, which means lid or cover. At the start of their development, tapas were simple slices of ham or cheese that were laid over a glass of wine. There are a couple theories on why lids were put on the wine. One is that it was to keep the flies out of your drink and the other is that they were used to hide the smell of bad wine. Either way, tapas were used to cover drinks and to this day are not starters, they are not main courses, and they are not snacks they are small plates of food, served with wine to enable you to taste the best of a bar or restaurants wares.
So, if youíre at La Manga, where will you find some seriously good tapas?
You could start with La Bodega, which is onsite and is a great little tapas bar. Found right next to the tennis centre itís cosy yet relaxed, making it a great place to go for a quick nibble after a match or a swim. Thereafter, thereís the Fairways at Bellaluz Pueblo, which is also a great spot for tapas. A really cool hangout, for people whoíve been visiting La Manga for a long time, youíll find it where the Sportsman used to be. Open all week long, The Fairways is, not surprisingly, a really popular tapas destination for golfers.
Offsite, Dolce Cavana, which is situated near Plaza Cavanna in La Manga Del Mar Menor is an unassuming little bar which (at the time of writing) is offering a free tapas with each drink. Representing particularly good value for money, youíll be able to enjoy some unusual nibbles along with some interesting Spanish wines here. Alternatively thereís El Barril del Tapeo, which is a relatively new addition to the restaurants around La Manga. Part of a chain of tapas restaurants, youíll find El Barril del Tapeo at the Atamaria Shopping Centre. Serving all day tapas, itís well worth a visit, although being a chain, it admittedly lacks some of the character of the traditional, one off Spanish tapas bars, but does benefit from a nice terrace.
Although not technically a tapas bar, the Miramar Restaurant is a great place to try if youíre wandering past and you happen to see that thereís space at the bar. In this stylish harbour-side restaurant, they serve some seriously good tapas in stunning surroundings and itís highly likely that by trying their tapas, youíll be drawn to come back for a meal.
So, no matter whether youíre planning a week or a fortnight at La Manga Club, itís important to put some tapas eating on your holiday agenda. Either choose to eat tapas just as a nibble before lunch or dinner, or make it your meal, itís entirely up to you.
