This article tells the story of how a group of guys ended up at La Manga Club, this six strong group of golf mad guys, whose partners do not golf, have no interest in golf and have decided to stay at home for this trip are seeking a bit of time away together. The guys are keen to go somewhere warm and sunny for their 5 day trip and want at least three different and challenging golf courses to keep them occupied. Money is not too much of a problem for them, but they want good value and are keen to combine their golf with a bit of tennis and maybe even a kick around football match or two while they are on their lads jolly. It is for all these reasons that they have chosen La Manga Club, as their destination.
They’re travelling off-season, so they know they can get flights from their various locations to Alicante. Alicante is a perfect airport arrival for La Manga Club because it’s only about an hour’s drive from the resort and they’re
familiar with the airport, so that works out well for them. They know they can get a couple of taxis at about 130 euro each and they also know that they probably won’t need a car once they arrive, but they’ve plumped for car hire nonetheless. There are 6 of them in total, so they’ve decided to hire a people mover or the likes. That way, there’s only ever need for one driver (not that they’re planning to drink too much alcohol of course!). James, who’s in charge of the organisation is going to sort out the car hire online because he does it all the time in his job, so he knows what it takes to sniff out a good deal.
Another reason this group needs a decent sized car is to accommodate all the golf clubs. Six sets of golf clubs plus six bags is a challenge for any car. The guys had toyed with the idea of hiring clubs when they get there, because they’ve heard that the rental equipment at La Manga is excellent and even caters for Geoff who’s a left-hander. However they’re in agreement that they’re all so precious about their game that they want their own clubs, which is understandable really.
Accommodation-wise, you’d imagine a group of guys would opt for the 5-star luxury of the Hotel Principe Felipe, but no. Alan, who’s a mad keen home chef wants to impress the boys with his cooking at least once while they’re away, so they’ve opted for a townhouse in Las Lomas Village. The benefit of the townhouse for this group over the hotel is that they feel as if they can come and go as they please and they can experience the great cuisine that Alan has been banging on about for so long. They’re happy to share twin rooms, so the 3-bed option is ideal for them, on the basis that all the rooms are en suite.
When it comes to the golf itself, they want to play each of the three courses at least once and they want to create a friendly tennis tournament. They’re also hoping to team up with a few other footie fanatics so they can play a friendly 5-a-side (with one on the bench at all times – they’re not as young as they used to be!). A couple of them might also take advantage of the Golf Academy to get some help with their short game in particular. For this, they’re aware that they’ll need to make a decision soon and book well before they arrive.
Even though they’re visiting La Manga Club off season, they don’t want to leave anything to chance, so they’ve booked six tee-off times at the same time as their accommodation. They plan to play all three courses twice have planned a round early-ish morning each of the three full days they’ll be in the resort and again late afternoon. That way, neither lunch nor a little tipple at the 19th will be affected by their schedule. Also, this means that they can get some tennis or footie organised in the middle of the day. After all, in October, it shouldn’t be too hot midday.
So, now they have all their arrangements made, it’s just the packing that needs to be organised. They all play pretty high standard golf at home, so they’re accustomed to the strict dress code at La Manga. What they don’t do so often at home though is play golf in shorts. The weather doesn’t normally lend itself to shorts all that often where they live, but ever hopeful for their holiday, they’ve all agreed that they’ll take a pair or two with them to encourage the sun to shine on their game.
Let’s hope it does!
