After months of waiting, The airport has risen to prominence recently due to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, with Southend providing the an additional travel option for those attending the sporting event. Southend Airport is now being used by the company Easyjet for flights out to many locations within Europe. Southend Airports owners, the Stobart haulage company, have spent £100million renovating the site to what it is now. Southend Airport is well-connected with central London, and with its relaxed atmosphere and speedy check in, it wont be long until people start using this airport rather than its other busier and more stressful rivals.
There are frequent trains from Liverpool Street to the airport and the journey takes just over 50 minutes which is only 5 minutes longer than it is to Stansted Airport. On the first day of Easyjet flying at Southend, it was the second best-selling airport on the Easyjet network. On the second day, sales of tickets from Southend to Alicante were the best selling, outselling Stansted three-to-one.
In addition to building a new air traffic control tower and extending the runway to accommodate Easyjet's Aircrafts , Southend Airport have also created a gleaming, light-filled terminal, which was officially opened last month. Although over the next few months it is inevitable that this quiet airport will start getting busier and busier, it shows how much of a low key feel the airport currently has by the cafe in the old terminal still being open for locals to stop in for a cup of tea. Thanks to the airport's small size, Southend is still likely to offer a speedier service than some of its bigger rivals, with less hassle.
With only a short walk from the railway station to the entrance of the terminal and the car park is a mere five-minute stroll away, there is no need to hang around for shuttle buses as passengers do at Gatwick and Stansted, making the start of your journey on holiday that little bit less stressful. With only a single duty free shop and a WHSmiths store, it doesn't have the range of products that maybe Gatwick or Stansted has but the departure lounge is refreshingly uncluttered and welcoming.
It is also know that Southend airport has boasted that you can get from plane to train in just 15 minutes. With having to get off the plane and collect your luggage, that may sound a little bit hopeful but it is still renowned for being quick. With the airport within easy travelling distance for many British holidaymakers in the South East, the increasing portfolios are set to see further increasing demand and although the sound of holidaying in Southend doesn't sound that appealing with the British weather, it does sound like a good place from which to start your holiday.
