Fiesta Time in Murcia

Spain is famous for their fiestas, each town doing something spectacular, and Murcia and the La Manga Region is no exception. There are always plenty of events throughout the year, some larger than others.

Easter in Murcia is a huge celebration, down to Spain being a mainly Catholic country. All towns throughout the country will hold celebrations, and it is likely that at least 3 working days will be lost due to the festivities. Murcia is known to be where some of the best Easter festivities are found.

A well know festival that takes place in Murcia is the Entierro De La Sardina, or Burial of the Sardine. This is a spring festivity that is always held on a Saturday between the 23rd - 27th of April. It involves groups of locals to dress up and escort a group of floats through the city streets. The locals dress up in weird and wonderful costumes such as giants (on stilts), demons and Brazilian samba dancers, amongst many other things. In the space of a few hours, hundreds of thousands of euros worth of toys are handed out to the crowds who have flocked in from all over the region. Music is played throughout the evening late in to the night and there is a fantastic firework display to round of a fantastic night as the paper maché effigy of a sardine goes up in smoke. This festival has been declared a International Tourist Interest

The Bando de la Huerta is the name given to the big day of festivities in the city of Murcia , taking place on Easter Tuesday. It is part of the Spring Festivities, held the week after Easter . The vast majority of Murcia will take to the streets in the morning and stay there all day. In the afternoon, the Parade Bando de la Huerta will take place, which consists of marching bands, locals dressing up in costumes, groups of dancers and floats, which are shown at work and typical elements of Murcia

During September, there is a Moors and Christians festival which are renowned for being one of the most colourful and spectacular Festivals in the entire Festivals calendar. In all Moors & Christians Festivals the towns will come alive with the sound of traditional music and colourful grandeur. Towns next to the coast with castles and a long history of invasion also hold elaborate naval battles. As with most Spanish Festivals, the party would not be complete without the blowing up of some gunpowder and the final act when the Christians win the battle around the simulated paper maché castle in the town square. This is topped off with loud music and an impressive fireworks display.

For three days during the International Festival of Mediterranean Folklore you can experience the songs, traditions, dances, dresses and general folklore of many Mediterranean cultures. Visited by many locals and visitors, the Mediterranean Folklore Festival is bursting with song and dance, with local folkdance groups recreating the orchard nooks with their taverns, in which you can sample some traditional recipes.
