Discover Cuarenta y Tres

If you have ventured out of La Manga Club, heading towards Cartagena, you might wonder what is going on in the very brightly multi coloured building to be seen in the distance on your right.

It is the factory that produces Cuarenta y Tres, Licor 43 which is a Spanish liquor made from 43 ingredients produced exclusively in Cartagena . The exact ingredients is a closely guarded family secret but it includes oranges, lemons, vanilla and herbs. The stripes on the factory building represent the ingredients and at the entrance the red stripes represent the red in the Spanish flag.

The factory offers tours for large and small groups of people and is an excellent day out and a good stop off before you reach Cartagena. The tour includes sampling 43 with coffee as a welcome drink, absolutely delicious, learning about the history of the drink and how and where it is produced and finally some cocktails sampling. There is a small charge for the tour. 43 can be drunk neat, over ice, with tonic or orange juice or used as a base for a variety of cocktails but beware because it is 33% proof.

As the factory is close to Cartagena it is an excellent day trip out allowing you to combine a tour with a trip into Cartagena with its lovely port area or the centre with its great tapas bars and restaurants. You are also very close to the Espacio Mediterraneo Shopping Centre which is also just before you reach Cartagena too and now houses a very large selection of well known stores so there is no excuse now not to combine the culture of Cartagena with a little retail therapy too.
