If you have already booked your accommodation at La Manga Club and are now at the stage of sorting out your transport, door to door, you probably have car hire on your mind. Assuming you are flying from the UK to either Alicante or Murcia (San Javier) Airports, you are truly going to be spoilt for choice. Although La Manga Club is only a relatively short and inexpensive taxi ride from either of these airports, there is no getting away from the freedom that car hire offers you during your holiday. Arguably La Manga is the sort of place where you could easily survive without a car, bearing in mind the low cost of car hire, it would seem a real shame to miss out on visiting the surrounding area for the sake of the small cost of hiring a car.
So what exactly are your options. On the day of writing, I carried out a Google search for cheap car hire Alicante Airport and was very pleasantly surprised to discover that there were 328,000 responses. Right at the top of the list, in the sponsored (ie paid for) results were 121CarHire, Rental Cars and Argus Car Hire. All of these companies were claiming to offer me the cheapest car hire at Alicante Airport. In fact Argus were quoting a headline rate of only £9 per day, which reinforces in many ways the great reasons to hire a car.
In the natural search results, Travel Supermarket, Deal Checker and Holiday Autos came in at the top of the pile. Again, each company’s short summary on Google was focused on the cheapness of what they had to offer. Deciding to delve deeper, I chose Argus Car Hire from the sponsored searches and Travel Supermarket from the natural searches to see who could provide me with a small, budget car at the best price for my dates and my journey from the airport to La Manga.
Argus Car hire offers deals from 550 car hire companies such as: Budget, Centauro, Europcar, National and Sixt. On the day I searched, for my high season dates, the best deal they offered me was a Peugeot 107 (or similar) for £129 for 7 days (all inclusive). The Travel Supermarket website, for some reason did not wish to load (which I found very disappointing and frustrating), so I decided to look at Deal Checker to see what they would offer me. Again, they trawled the market on my behalf and came up with a Mini Economy vehicle at £17 per day, which, if my calculations are correct equates to £119 for my full rental period.
Moving on to Murcia (San Javier) Airport as my preferred flight destination to get me to La Manga, I carried out the same search for “cheap car hire Murcia (San Javier) Airport”. Probably because the airport is significantly smaller, so there’s less demand, there were fewer results, but still an impressive 13,100 on the day of writing. In the sponsored searches, Rental Cars, Argus Car Hire and Booking Buddy were top of the list and in the natural searches, Car Rentals, Travel Supermarket and Economy Car hire.
This time, I decided to try Booking Buddy and Economy Car Hire to see what they would offer me (for the same dates as before). Booking Buddy gave me the option to select companies for the search, which I found a bit confusing, but finally I decided to go for Argus Car Hire, Rental Cars, Atlas Choice and Kayak. Argus came out the cheapest at £123.72, followed by Rental Cars at £131.80 and Atlas Choice at £142.29. Kayak had no vehicles available for my dates. So again, these seemed like very reasonable deals for small, runaround type cars. Finally, Economy Car Hire at Murcia (San Javier) offered me a Ford Ka at £137, which, compared with the other offers seemed a little bit disappointing. Effectively however, I now know that I can get my family and myself to and from La Manga Club and have the peace of mind of a car during my stay for what seems like an incredibly small investment on my part.
So, what this exercise has proved to me is that there’s little to be gained in organising a taxi from either Alicante or Murcia (San Javier) Airport to La Manga Club when you can hire a car for so little. The great thing about car hire is that you can pre-book it and you know when you come down the steps of the plane, your car will be waiting for you, ready to load up and head off to La Manga. You won’t need to hang around in taxi queues, hoping you’ll be able to get your luggage off the carousel quickly enough to get you to the front! You’ll be able to organise your party so that one of you picks up the car, while the others sort out the baggage, meaning you can be on the road to La Manga Club before you know it. That’s the real freedom of car hire and in my book; it’s well worth organising.
