Ancient jawbone of early European found in Spain

27th March 2008
Spanish holidays could become more educational than ever after it was revealed that the jawbone of the oldest human remains in western Europe were discovered in the Mediterranean country.

The discovery of a lower jaw - complete with some teeth - was found in northern Spain by archaeologists and the location in Sierra de Atapuerca has now been made a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The bone - which could be from a female - was found near to other relics including stone tools.

"It gives us confidence that Europe was not left out of the picture of the spread of early humans," Professor Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum said, according to the BBC.

Holidaymakers now travelling to villas with pools in Spain can do so knowing that their ancestors were there about 1.1-1.2 million years before them.
