Kent Airport
The increase in flights and number of low cost airlines over the past few years has dovetailed with the increase in people arranging their own holiday accommodation overseas.
Many of the low cost budget airlines will not deal with the regular high street travel agent. This is an effort to keep their costs to a minimum and reduce the requirement to factor in a commission element to the price to the consumer. This means that the final flight price to the consumer can be kept to a minimum.

The US has always had small local airlines servicing regions within the US, offering internal flights only but considering the size of the US this works fine, but for the system to operate successfully the flights needed to include both internal and international travel. The network of airports that the likes of Ryanair and Easyjet support and serve with their low cost flights is huge and cover virtually every airport in Europe.
When the low cost airlines started their flight services it created a price war between the airlines, as many of the larger more established airline carriers reduced their flight prices to match and compete with the newer low cost no frills carriers. This did cause problems as their business model did not allow their costs to be reduced to such an extent. The outcome was that the more established airlines virtually withdrew from the short haul market and concentrated on long haul flights which proved to be the more lucrative.
Many of the low cost airlines especially in Europe fly to regional smaller airports that the main carriers. This once again allows them to reduce and keep costs to a minimum. However the downside has been that areas have grown and have been developed as a result of these low cost airlines opening up routes into these otherwise unknown and sometimes remote areas and if the low cost airline decides to withdraw and no longer offer the route, then people who have bought holiday homes in the area now find it both difficult and more expensive to visit these areas.
The low cost airlines are much more nimble in their activity and are more likely to withdraw flight routes much quicker than the larger more established airlines.
