1944 the Triumph car hire company was bought by the Standard Motor Company and was turned into the Triumph Motor Company Limited. In 1946 a new range of automobiles were designed and put into production such as the Triumph Roadster and the 1800 Town and Country saloon (aka the Triumph Renown). One of the most popular old triumphs to this day was the Mayflower, a small light weight saloon car.
Triumph car hire shifted it focus to sporting cars and developed the Triumph TR2. It was built between 1953 and 1955 of which time a recorded 8636 cars were built. However in 2002, the DVLA released data showing that only 517 examples remain on the UK roads. The TR2 had a twin SU carburettor similar to that off the 1991 cc four cylinder vanguard engines. The body was mounted on a separate chassis and had coil sprung suspension on the front and the basic leaf springs at the rear. The popular wire wheels were often favourite over disc wheels and the transmission of the car was a four speed manual with overdrive. The car had a top speed of 107 miles per hour and reached 0 – 60 in 11.9 seconds flat.
Other cars in the Triumph car hire range include the classic Triumph Stag. This luxury sport car was produced to compete with Mercedes Benz SL class models. The Stag was a four seated convertible coupe with a removable hardtop. The car hit the public market in 1970 and has seen the Mk1 and the Mk2 versions designed. There is believed to be around 9000 Triumph Stags in the UK today, and are a very sort after classic car.
The Triumph 2000 was a car that was popular on British roads in the 60’s and 70’s. It was a medium sized car that had a six cylinder engines that was first seen in tine vanguard in 1961. Equipped with a 4 speed manual gearbox or a 3 speed automatic gear box it was a pleasure to drive! A lot of these cars are still being looked after and driven on the roads today and make an excelling first car to enter the classic car craze.
