By the End of the 9th Century the Jewish population of this city had almost formed their own independent town within the city. It was here in this enclave that many books of the Kabala were written, the mystical school of Jewish thinking. With the protection of the Spanish kings the Jewish population prospered here until in 1391 a wave of persecution began which didn’t end for more than 100 years at this time the area began to empty as the Jews were compelled to leave Spain. Luckily this area has remained very well preserved.
