Hertz Car Hire dates back to the very start of World War One, they moved on to provide chauffeur driven safaris from Cape Town to Cairo spanning the length of Africa. The company then began to station themselves at ports railway stations and harbours. From the very beginning dynamic company chiefs led to the rapid expansion of the Hertz car hire company.
In 1919 two survivors of the Battle of Delville started. The Hertz company under the original name of Deville Wood Motor Car Hire, After just a decade of operation in 1930 a young Scotsman called Bob Murray bought the company and Changed the name to the African Car Hire Company, Murray had a better eye for business and it was from this point that the Hertz Car Hire company was truly born. Murry’s work led him to become known as Mr Africa in America and if you were planning an excursion to Africa during the thirties you would certainly use the Africa Chauffeur driven service at some point.
It wasn’t until the fifties when Hertz ran into their first competition, Murray decided to franchise his enterprise and at this point the company became known as Hertz. The competition was run by a young man named Noel De Villiers his company known as Zeda Car Hire today is called Avis rent a car they focussed on airport locations for their main revenue. At this point commercial air travel was becoming affordable and a new market for car hire was readily available. Hertz soon realised that if they wanted to be competitive they would also have to move into the airport car hire business.
Eventually Noel de Villiers began to expand his empire until the point where he and Sage holidays bought Hertz Hire car, De Villiers shared Murray’s vision of being the only Car Hire company in Africa. The heady of Car Hire boom saw Hertz expand rapidly becoming the most successful hire company in Africa. Business was booming until 1986 when political pressure came to bear and Hertz had to comply with the Sullivan Code Request for American companies to disinvest from South Africa. Fortunately for Hertz when the New South Africa was born in 1994. In 1997 Hertz made a return and made a strong and lasting relationship with Black owned consortium New Africa Investments Limited. This new partnership guaranteed social equality and social development throughout the entire Hertz Car Hire organisation.
In 1997 when Hertz re-launched their brand De Villiers spoke fondly of Bob Murray and his vision for the best Car Hire, tourism and company operation in South Africa. Since Hertz’s return to Car in 1997 they have grown in size exponentially, becoming the number one car hire company in South Africa and through innovative marketing and investment in people they are now one of the largest international Car Hire companies offering the very best service and highest quality vehicles around the globe.
