The magnificent Guggenheim museum in Bilbao was completed just over ten years ago. Since the very moment the bespoke Titanium doors were opened to the public Bilbao has been transforming into a haven for any culture vultures. The Guggenheim was one of the world’s most revolutionary buildings; using Computer Aided Drawing and materials which hadn’t been used in the building industry ever before Canadian-American Architect Frank Gehry produced a structure which in it self was a work of art.
A visit to the three story Guggenheim and a journey through the world’s greatest contemporary artists will
certainly not disappoint. The art house gallery has become the regions number one tourist attraction and consequently has become very busy. Try visiting early in the morning or late in afternoon on a day when they have a late opening; these are the best times to avoid the biggest queues.
Partnered with the ultra-contemporary designs of the Guggenheim there is the old side of Bilbao the rambling houses, narrow cobbled streets, squares and different building styles all sit together in a perfect juxtaposition with the modern. Make sure you take a trip to the Casco Viejo for some of the towns most interesting architecture and best restaurants and cafes.
