As with many Spanish cities on this coastline Almeria has an intriguing history. The City is full of charm and remnants of Roman, Moorish and catholic rule are still prevalent. Almeria sits on the beautiful Mediterranean coastline fringed by white sandy beaches and backed by the towering mountain ranges which reach towards Granada. Just outside of the city atop the peaks is the crowning glory of the Moorish rule; the Alalcazaba fortress stands guard over the city and looks as impressive today as it did then. The Caliph of Cordoba, Adb-erRahman built the fortress including three large walled enclosures. In one of these fortifications you can find the remnants of an ancient Mosque. Many of these places of worship were destroyed or Catholic chapels were built on top by the Kings who overthrew the Moors.
When war broke out the fortress cold hold an army of more than 20,000 men. Another place which you must visit during your stay is the Barrio de la Chanca, and the areas strange fortified cathedral notice the gothic style construction and renaissance façade. From the fortress you get a good view of where this area is.
The Alcazaba fortress was constructed during the city’s wealthiest moment in history. Almeria grew rich as a principal port town. They traded textiles and in particular silk which earned them the status the city has today.
The city offers much to be explored but if you have gone to the extent of hiring a car why not take advantage of this and visit some of the near by towns and villages which make this place so interesting here are a couple of ideas.
Mojacar is a great place to visit if you are travelling with children it is the best beach resort near to Almeria. Majocar playa is where you want to head as the old town is located two kilometers inland from this wonderful stretch of narrow beach.
For lunch and a break from the heat Mojacar old town is a welcome lunch stop. Heavily Moorish influenced white houses dot the hillside and if you are interested in playing golf this is the best place to stop at. Marina del Torre is a newly built luxury course; but there is also the unique Desert Springs course which is the only desert course in the country. It is well worth playing if you are used to playing golf in the UK for a welcome change of scenery and pace.
The Cabo ed Gata Nature park is supposedly the driest and hottest place in all of Europe, Volcanic hills and long empty beaches are to be found with out too much trouble. Dramatic views and some rare wildlife are found on the tip of the peninsular, be warned though if you are travelling with young children the seas can sometimes be a bit rough here.
For a safer day playing in the water you should consider the Vera water park. The park’s slides and flumes are actually built directly on the side of a mountain; the park caters for people of all ages with smaller flumes and shallow pools for even the youngest in your group. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you fed whilst you relax in the sunshine.
For a trip that will take a little longer but is worth the effort two hours drive in your hire car will take you as far as Granada where you can visit the exquisite Alhambra palace. |
